An early Twentieth Century postcard showing the main Sheffield to Stockport road as it skirts Mam Tor.
This section of road was built in the early 1800s
to bypass the steep Winnats
Pass. However, the road
was in constant need of repair due to land slips.
The authorities finally gave up, and in 1979 the
road was closed permanently.
The website of the British Geological Survey has
interesting technical information about the slip, which they say started three
or four thousand years ago.
