Edale Head House

The remains of Edale Head House. Once a resting place and overnight stop for pack horse trains and the men in charge of them (the men were known as Jaggers).

Millstones

Hundreds of millstones, in various stages completion, were abandoned when the market for them dried up in the late 1800s.

This stone tells a story.
It was well on the way to completion after many weeks of work with hand tools...........

..........when, it appears, a large lump of stone broke off, making it useless.
One can only imagine how blue the air was!

End of the road

An early Twentieth Century  postcard showing the main Sheffield to Stockport road as it skirts Mam Tor.
This section of road was built in the early 1800s to bypass the steep Winnats Pass. However, the road was in constant need of repair due to land slips.
The authorities finally gave up, and in 1979 the road was closed permanently.

The website of the British Geological Survey has interesting technical information about the slip, which they say started three or four thousand years ago.

Lost villages

A Peak & Northern Footpath Society sign near Edale.
It still points the way to the villages of Ashopton and Derwent, seventy years after they were abandoned and flooded. Both communities were submerged in the waters of the Ladybower reservoir.

The village of Ashopton, dwarfed by the viaduct being built to carry the A57 road over Ladybower.

Derwent village.

First visit to Poole's Cavern today. Very interesting and informative tour thanks to our guide Lauren.

First effort

This is my first blog. I'm hoping it won't be the last. Others may hope otherwise.
